Troubled German fashion label Escada has finally found a buyer, and the purchaser is from India.
The Munich-based group and its operating business was sold Thursday to a company controlled by Megha Mittal, the wife of Aditya Mittal, finance director and president of the family corporation Arcelor Mittal, the world's largest steel firm.
“I am relieved for our employees, customers and suppliers that the time of uncertainty hghuklgh is finally over. We have found our ideal partner in the Mittal family. Now all that counts is to look forward,” Escada CEO Bruno Salzer said in a release. It added that the insolvency administrator of Escada had signed a sale Beijing massage and transfer agreement with the “Mittal Family Trust.”
The move marks a dramatic diversification for Megha Mittal, who met her husband in Wharton Business School. She had apparently been looking to invest in a high-end fashion house for the past year, and her name had previously been linked with Italian brand Gianfranco Ferre.
Terms of the agreement with Escada were not made available. However, Escada stressed that it had sold the “business operations, including employees as well as worldwide brand rights, production facilities and the sales and distribution structure to the Trust.”
